As good rule of thumb, you should check your credit report every single year. This gives you the opportunity to see exactly what your lenders and creditors are reporting about your account activity. The other added benefit is to see if there has been any attempt by others beside yourself to try and open accounts using your information. Which we all know happens on a daily basis to many in this country. And some time it’s way to late to catch it even with all the new guidelines that have been put into place.

Now granted, that is the worst case scenario but it never hurts to check your credit report in case there is some data in your report that is inaccurate. Another time that you might want to be reviewing your credit information is when you start contemplating a large purchase that you’ll need to borrow money on.

A few good examples might be, a new car, maybe a home equity line of credit, a vacation home or loan to remodel your current residence. And for most people, this usually requires the services of a lender, usually your bank. Now you might be thinking that you have a wonderful relationship with your bank, they know you by name when you visit but when it comes time to lend you money, you become nothing more than a set of statistics (your credit score) that turn you into a faceless entity.

Sure, that sound a bit harsh but that’s the reality in today’s day and age. That is why you need to check your credit report regularly.

What you need to understand is that there still is a human error factor when it comes to reporting your credit information. And the only way you’ll ever detect if there is an error in your credit report is to have it sitting in front you.

Did you know that you are entitled to receive your credit report from each of the three major credit reporting companies once a year? Indeed you are. And you can get these for free without having to pay a single dime. Just go to and follow the steps. This is a website established by TransUnion, Equifax and Experian so that consumers have easy access to getting their credit reports.

If you haven’t had the time to check your credit report in a while, it is advisable to get all three of your reports at the same time and compare the information in each. Although most of the information may be identical, each agency will also have information that the others do not. Now remember, you are only entitled to your report once a year under normal circumstances.

As suggested above, the first time you want to check your credit report, do all three at once. Then set yourself up on a schedule to get one credit report every 4 months from each individual credit reporting company.

When you use this method to check your credit report, you actually are becoming your own credit monitoring service. And what’s even better, you didn’t have to pay for it.
